One Grain of Sand

One Grain of Sand by David Somerfleck Book Cover
Summary

Read the book Kirkus Reviews calls “…riveting and frighteningly plausible;” that Reader’s Favorite admits is “…intense and fantastically imaginative;” and that Literary Titan reports “…conveys sensations most stories rush past.”

What would you do if you lived in a near-future United States of America in which the President has declared weekend minority culling “Passes” legal?

In which citizens must compete in reality TV programs for healthcare, the right to travel, higher education, or “freedom” to live in private segregated communities?

What would you do if you were falling for a beautiful biracial climatologist and artist who might be a member of a radical “terrorist” network?

And you knew someone, somewhere, probably has placed a bullseye on your head?

This is the future in which Noah Harpster, humble incongruent anachronism, pickpocket, and three-time loser, finds himself cast.

Like you, he’s got some tough decisions to make with too few options.

To the government, and everyone else, he’s just one more grain of sand in the system’s colossal hourglass.

And time’s running out….

Reviews

“A character-driven SF tale that’s both riveting and frighteningly plausible.” — Kirkus Reviews

“…Supremely intense and fantastically imaginative.…” —
Readers’ Favorite  ★★★★★

“…Conveys sensations that most stories rush past. —Literary Titan ★★★★★

“A scary and fantastic projection of how we could go in the near future… that horrifies the imagination.”— Daniel D. Bate, Author ★★★★★

“A quietly affecting novel that examines grief, memory, and the slow work of healing. Somerfleck writes with a restrained, lyrical prose that favors sensory detail and intimate observation over dramatic plot turns. The book centers on a protagonist coping with loss; much of its power comes from small domestic moments, precise imagery, and the way relationships are rendered with gentle complication rather than tidy resolution.” — Verified Biblio Reader ★★★★★

Join the Flock and Other Poems by David Somerfleck is a very interesting poetry collection. I quickly found myself drawn into David Somerfleck’s world. The poems move through memories, family stories, relationships, work experiences, and encounters with nature. There is no single storyline holding everything together, yet that did not bother me.

In fact, it felt rather like listening to someone share pieces of their life over a long conversation. One moment I was in a classroom, the next in a park, beside a creek, or following a childhood memory. A few poems stayed with me after I had finished reading, especially Samara, Another Home, and The Pit Curves Toward the Summit, which are so moving and out of the ordinary, to say the least. They all deal with different subjects, but each captures something recognizably human.

Join the Flock and Other Poems by David Somerfleck is a collection of poems that I enjoyed thoroughly thanks to their originality and the style of the author. What made me keep turning the pages was not so much the imagery or the technique, although there is plenty to admire there.

It was the feeling that these poems came from lived experience. As a language teacher, I spend my days encouraging young people to observe, remember, and make connections. Some poems made me smile because they captured small details of life so accurately.

Others brought back memories of my own family. As a mum and now a grandparent, I found myself lingering over the poems that explore parents, children, and the way the past never completely leaves us. What I appreciated was the honesty. I never had the impression that the poet was trying to impress the reader. Thank you for such a great book!

Love Her Blind & Other Poems

Love Her Blind and Other Poems by David Somerfleck 2026
Summary

Within these pages, ember-ghosts entwine,
Where long, black rivers shine like tarred-out wine.

Sunflowers hold bold gold; with winter’s bite mighty tight,
Icicle tears fall and break with each breath of brittle night.

Here love is an iron, barbed, and rusted key;
It cuts, then brightens, binding readers to see.

A hammer-fist on glass makes spidered pain anew,
And memory rains, then dries to ash-streaked stain.

Rocking chairs, once meant to soothe, turn to dread now;
They swing like storms above a child’s cold head.

Birdsong with beeps; crows counsel, sharp and rough;
They ask what you will bear, and how much is too much.

Roots drink red blood; the silent forests pray;
A Grandfather-God lifts stars like lambent clay.

A tall man waits there; streetlights blink and fade;
The searing needle steers your will through shade.

These poems are matchflames in the midnight room;
They stitch your heart with light, to loosen doom.

Pray, Muse, let broken visions rise,
To summon forth rising sea tides deep within inspired eyes.

My Grandfather’s God & Other Poems

Poetry by David Somerfleck
Summary

In My Grandfather’s God, David Somerfleck invites readers into a poetic journey through the vast landscape of human experience—where love and loss, spirituality and skepticism, pain and transcendence intersect.

Each poem is a revelation—sometimes tender, sometimes unflinching—exploring how belief, memory, and identity shape our understanding of self and the cosmos. Within these pages, the divine is questioned, confronted, and occasionally found in the quiet corners of everyday life.

Themes range from the generational weight of faith and family to the scars left by abuse, the solace of love, the ache of loss, and the elusive beauty of truth. These poems move between the intimate and the infinite, where personal wounds echo against the backdrop of cosmic thought and hard-won wisdom.
